OVERVIEW:
The AJNR Proofreader is responsible for reviewing and editing content to ensure that it meets the highest standards of accuracy, clarity, and formatting for publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal. This role requires a keen eye for detail, familiarity with medical terminology, and the ability to meet deadlines.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Proofread and edit article proofs, graphical abstracts, and electronic case presentations to ensure grammatical accuracy, proper spelling, correct punctuation, and adherence to the AMA Manual of Style and preferred terminology guidelines
Ensure that articles, graphical abstracts, and electronic case presentations adhere to formatting standards set by the journal, including tables, figures, and headings
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review AJNR article proofs for consistency with AMA Manual of Style, grammar, syntax, and format
- Review AJNR and AJNR: Clinical Practice graphical abstracts for style, syntax, and grammar
- Review electronic cases for style, syntax, and grammar
- Review AJNR and AJNR: Clinical Practice website pages for spelling, grammar, consistency, and accuracy
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Proven experience in proofreading or editing medical manuscripts, journal articles, or clinical research papers
- In-depth knowledge of AMA Manual of Style and medical terminology
- Strong command of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax
- Familiarity with medical citation styles (e.g., Vancouver)
- Proficiency in using editing tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, Google Docs, etc.)
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree; experience at an association or publisher is desirable
- Knowledge of radiology terminology in general, and neuroradiology specifically, is desirable
- Certification or training in medical proofreading or editing (e.g., Board of Editors in the Life Sciences) is desirable
INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to Managing Editor. Works with Associate Managing Editor, Digital Publications Editor, and Scientific Editor.
EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Contact with Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor, Senior Editors, Editorial Board for AJNR
