Company Profile
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
Company Overview
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is one of the most respected regulatory agencies in America's financial community. The FDIC symbol guarantees depositors that they can depend on up to $250,000 of insured deposits.
The FDIC is recognized as an employer of choice among mid-size federal government employers. We operate very much like a private business, and consistently outrank other agencies in employees’ sense of empowerment, effective leadership, diversity and inclusion, performance-based rewards and advancement, strategic management, fairness, compensation, work-life balance, employee development, and teamwork. FDIC employees know that the work that they do contributes directly to the stability of and public confidence in the banking system and makes a difference in the lives of consumers.
An independent agency of the federal government, the FDIC receives no Congressional appropriations – it is funded by premiums that banks and thrift institutions pay for deposit insurance coverage and from earnings on investments in U.S. Treasury securities. With an insurance fund totaling more than $49 billion, the FDIC insures more than $3 trillion of deposits in U.S. banks and thrifts – deposits in virtually every bank and thrift in the country.
The FDIC directly examines and supervises roughly 5,250 banks and savings banks, more than half of the institutions in the banking system. To protect insured depositors, the FDIC responds immediately when a bank or thrift institution fails. The FDIC employs about 4,500 people. It is headquartered in Washington, DC, but conducts much of its business in six regional offices and in 85 field offices around the country.
